Overview

Moki Doorstep is a vehicle rooftop assistance device that allows easy access to the roof of a car to load skis, bikes, kayaks, and more.

The product is compatible with any car and hooks to the door latch of a car. It was created by husband and wife duo, Zachary and Alyssa Brown, who are outdoor enthusiasts from Newington, Connecticut.

Shark Tank Appearance

In 2019, Zach and Alyssa Brown appeared on season 9 of Shark Tank, asking for $150,000 for 5% equity. The Sharks were impressed by the ingenuity of the couple’s product.

Daymond John was intrigued and had connections at Cox Automotive, so he made an opening offer of $450,000 for 20%. The founders said the equity was too high and indicated they would rather sell the entire business.

Daymond took the hint and bought the company for $3 million.

After Shark Tank

After Shark Tank, the deal to buy Moki Doorstep did not close. More than likely Daymond wasn’t able to get a global distribution deal.

Nevertheless, Zach and Alyssa continued running the business and sold over 150,000 units.

Partnering with Rightline Gear got them into major retailers such as Dick’s Sporting Goods, Duluth Trading Post, and REI. The product can also be purchased on Amazon and MokiDoorstep.com, with a slightly higher price on the official website.

Rightline Gear was later acquired by MacNeill Group in November 2021 for an undisclosed sum. Zach is still involved with running the business and helps out at tradeshows.

Moki Doorstep is currently worth $5 million as of 2024, with an annual revenue of around $780,000. Overall customer reviews are overwhelmingly positive, with an average rating of 4.6 stars from 5,045 reviews on Amazon.

The Browns also welcomed their second child, Alyssa was pregnant during the filming.

About the Founders

Zachary Brown is a firefighter with a fire protection degree from Eastern Kentucky University, while his wife, Alyssa, is a registered nurse. The couple loves outdoor adventures and frequently uses their car’s roof rack.

However, Alyssa’s height posed a safety hazard when climbing up on the vehicle’s roof. This led Zach to develop a tool that could be attached to the door striker of a car, which he called the Moki Doorstep.

Zach’s uncle is a silent partner in the business and helped with capital and filing a patent, while Alyssa assisted with daily operations.

Founding Moki Doorstep

Zach raised more than $110,000 from 2,000 backers on Kickstarter to fund the Moki Doorstep, as he did not want to borrow money.

Before appearing on Shark Tank, they were in talks with Rightline Gear for a distribution deal for the US market. The product was launched in 2017 and was an instant success in the US.
